Our History

Mission Statement: “To meet the health care and housing needs of the elderly residents of the community with a commitment to their physical personal and emotional needs while providing an environment which encourages independence and feelings of self-worth”.

J.H. Floyd Sunshine Manor, Inc. is the product of the dreams and hard work of the late Reverend John Henry Floyd and The Sarasota’s Choirs’ Union. In the early 1950’s The Choir’s Union solicited the support of the community to develop an institution to care for those who were ill indigent and in need of medical assistance with nowhere to go.  The Old folks Aid Home opened in 1960 with 30 residents.

A new center opened at the current Eighteenth Street location in 1967. A decade later additional construction enlarged the facility.  In 1982 the Old Folks Aid Home was renamed J.H. Floyd Sunshine Manor, Inc. and became the not-for-profit organization it is today.

The J.H. Floyd Sunshine Manor Campus of Superior Care remains a cornerstone in the Sarasota Community.  Employing in excess of 200 medical professionals, we continue the tradition of excellence by offering the educational advantages of Training Resources 2000, our professional Certified Nursing Assistant Training School.  The residents of our facilities benefit greatly from the additional staff from our school.

For many years, J.H. Floyd Nursing Center had been rated “superior” by the State of Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration. The system to measure facilities has changed. The Agency no longer gives superior ratings, however in 2002 our Nursing Center was listed as the highest rated facility for quality of care in Sarasota by the The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Quality Measures program.

In November 1990 J.H. Floyd Rehabilitation Center was formed.  This is a team of therapeutic professionals that offer services to those on our campus as well as those that have gone home and require additional therapy to achieve a complete recovery. The Rehabilitation Team includes Speech, Occupational, Physical and Restorative Therapy.

The 59-unit apartment complex known as J.H. Floyd Sunshine Village Inc. opened in July 1991.  This important community asset offers retired adults over 62, or those physically handicapped a secure, comfortable home at an affordable price, in an independent living setting.

Sunshine Meadows Assisted Living Facility opened in June of 1997. An additional wing of elegant private and semi-private suites were completed the Spring of 2002, bringing the total number of beds to 75. The beautifully appointed building now offers many amenities in a supported comfortable environment.

In March 2004 our 44-unit apartment complex known as Meadow Park Independent Living opened to accommodate the growing need for home-like and affordable housing for seniors.

Thanks for the generosity of the Sarasota Citizens, The Selby Foundation, The Community Foundation, Mr. Harry Sudakoff, The Paddock Foundation, The United Way and The Venice Foundation; the J.H. Floyd Sunshine Manor Campus provides comfortable home-like living facilities from independent living, assisted living, to full nursing home care.
