Nursing Home Care

J.H. Floyd Nursing Center

Nestled between a community park and the lovely Victorian gazebo, J.H. Floyd Nursing Center is the hub of campus activities. The nursing center is a secure retreat for those that are no longer able to care for themselves, or are recovering from a hospitilization.

Parking for family members is conveniently located near the front door. You are immediately struck by the beautiful landscaped pathways and stately oak trees that adorn the building exterior. The front lobby's chandelier, atop elegant high ceiling and the tasteful decor gives you a hint of what you will find in the building.

As you enter, a friendly face gives you directions, and it quickly becomes apparent you have entered a home with a family; not just another medical facility. Professionally trained in their craft, the administrative personnel you encounter leave you with the impression that you are always welcome to discuss any questions or concerns.

As you turn the corner, the smell of pot roast is in the air. You pass the large glass windows that house the lovely dining room and you can see the aids walking between tables serving the noon meal. The room and activities are reminiscent of a fine restaurant.

A nurse's station bustles with activity. Medication carts line the side as professionals review the doctor's orders. The Medical Director does rounds every week and drops in to check on residents that need a little extra attention. The Nurses care for a multitude of illnesses and conditions with the ease and confidence of those that have years of experience.

Two beds with nightstands are against one wall. On the other is a center sink and cabinet that houses twin dressers. A large double closet is in the corner. The bath is large and tiled, the shower stall is without restrictions so movement is easy. The resident room is clean, comfortable and efficient with everything that one could need.

At the end of the hall is the big bright activities room. Often groups from local churches and civic organizations entertain the residents. The activities department staff provides all forms of creative, fun and educational crafts, programs and outings.

At the other end of the hall several rooms open to a surprise. A large rehabilitation center dotted with all sorts of exercise equipment is on the right. On the left is a long room flanked by cubbyholes filled with balls, ropes and assorted therapy tools. This is the Rehabilitation Center. At the desks sit busy people with white coats. An older man moves slowly on an exercise bike; while a therapist holds the arm of a small woman as she rises from a wheel chair. There is a sense of peace and deliberate motion in the actions of those here.

As you leave the rehab wing, you can catch a glimpse of the huge oak tree shading the little gazebo in the center courtyard. Bright sunlight pours in to a second solarium, visible from the east side nurse's station. You have come full circle and realize that the building is small enough to have great personality, but large enough that it offers the diversity needed to remain a fresh, vibrant professional medical facility. It also reminds you of being in a clean and comfortable home.
